Programme Information
Curriculum 2013/2014
The MIM is designed to provide the knowledge and analytical capabilities that will allow you to take a key role in international business. To help our students achieve their career goals, the MIM curriculum combines a global perspective, strategic capabilities and knowledge of the main international management challenges. It is organized in five main areas: personal skills training, a functional perspective of international business, an integrated international managerial framework, the development of international businesses and the final dissertation.
The completion of courses totaling 60 credit units will entitle the student to the Post-Graduate Diploma in International Management. Those who go on to successfully defend their dissertation/project will be awarded the degree of Master in International Management.
The Master in International Management comprises three parts:
1st academic year (taught part of the programme)
- 1st semester: September to January
- 2nd semester: February until May
Summer term: June to July
2nd academic year
- Project / Dissertation: starting in September
2nd Academic Year ECTS Project / Dissertation 36
Project / Dissertation
The dissertation represents a challenging opportunity to integrate the concepts, tools and analytical frameworks acquired in the programme and it can take a more professionally or a more research oriented content, depending on the objectives of each student.
ISCTE Business School has a long tradition of involvement with the business world, offering a wide set of opportunities to interact with challenging real business issues in which students can develop their dissertations. Additionally, the faculty combines members with an extensive business experience in very senior management positions in a international context and members with a strong research track record in international issues, fitting well with each student's interests and objectives.
Electives
Students choose two electives totaling 6 credits to pursue specialized topics of their interest.
You may choose from courses such as: International Corporate Governance, Advanced International Finance, Marketing Portfolio, Governance of International Organizations and others.
Portuguese Language (optional)
Students may take a course of Portuguese Language. Besides helping with everyday life in Lisbon, a knowledge of the Portuguese language opens up new opportunities since Portuguese is a language spoken in some of the more important and dynamic countries in America and Africa (and in other parts of the world).
Teambuilding
At the beginning of the academic year, MIM dedicates one day to help integrate its recently admitted students and get them to know each other better, by organising an ice breaking event outside ISCTE-IUL premises.
Midweek abroad (optional)
At each edition there will be offered the opportunity to participate in a Midweek Seminar Programme* at one of our partner universities.
The Midweek will take the students to a different learning environment and offers another opportunity to increase their intercultural competencies.
On a highly practical level and together with Master's students from our partner universities, students will be offered, within 3-4 days, lectures, workshops and company visits.
In the academic year 2007/2008, the MIM students travelled to Hochschule Pforzheim, Germany.
In the academic year 2008/2009, MIM students travelled to Barcelona, Spain.
*NOTE: the travel and lodging expenses and are not covered by the tuition fee and have to be paid by each participant.
Faculty
The international backgrounds of the faculty and their varied research interests provide students with a unique opportunity to learn from and interact with world-class faculty. The MIM has maintained the strong involvement of a distinguished visiting faculty aimed at providing a deeper connection with intercultural and geographical diversity.

Here you find a general overview for the academic year 2013/2014:
Start: September 2013 | End: July 2014
Welcome Session: 02nd of September 2013
Start of classes: 03rd of September 2013
Class usually meets three times a week, on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 6.00 pm to 9.00 pm and every two weeks on Saturday mornings (9:30 am to 12:30 pm). In some cases the class may meet on other days and at different times - for example when courses are taught by visiting professors. Some electives and other non-compulsory activities may also be offered at different times. On the other hand, some courses are taught in an intensive way and may be given on consecutive days.
We would like to draw your attention to two particular courses:
International Consulting (IC) is an intensive, practical-oriented seminar and will take place during the day. The exact workload and dates will be defined during the academic year. As IC is a compulsory subject, it may be necessary that students take up to 2 days from work for this seminar.
Global Business and Management (GBM) is a module lectured by visiting professors. Each visiting professor can lecture from 1 to 4 sessions. Some professors request assignments/group works.
Courses run from September to July
Holidays for 2013/2014
Christmas: two last weeks of December
Carnival break: mid February 2014
Easter break: two weeks in April 2014

FAQ
We have listed a number of questions often asked by our applicants. Please read this page carefully, you will get answers to many of your questions here.
What is the language policy of the Master in International Management (MIM)?
The programme is conducted entirely in English although throughout the programme you may attend additional courses to improve your Portuguese language skills.
My mother tongue is not English. Do I have to take TOEFL or IELTS tests?
We do not require these tests. However applicants must demonstrate a good command of oral English, comprehension and written skills. You may of course wish to include your language test results in order to enhance your application.
Do I need to know Portuguese?
No. However, within the MIM programme Portuguese language courses for foreigners are offered during the whole year, so you can really enjoy and make the most of the experience of living in Lisbon. As Brazil and Portuguese-speaking African countries are dynamic and emerging markets, learning Portuguese will enhance your professional qualifications and advance your career prospects.
Are there any scholarships available for international students?
Unfortunately we do not offer any scholarships or grants for this course. Students must cover their living costs (approx. 650€/month) themselves.
Is a "study abroad" period compulsory?
No but we strongly recommend it. This is the best way to improve your international experience and an additional learning opportunity in an international business school.
If I am admitted, will the Programme organize my study at a foreign university or have I got to do it myself?
The MIM Programme provides students with information and counselling about different opportunities to study abroad at partner Universities. Students can choose from the variety of offers, receive help in the preparation of their applications and the necessary logistics for enrolling in their programmes.
What is a double degree?
After spending the 1st year at IBS within the MIM programme, students may spend one semester at one of our partner universities, attending the appropriate Master's programme and, at the same time, working on their dissertation project. These courses are fully recognized within the MIM at IBS.
After completing the taught part of both programs in this way, students present a final dissertation/project complying with the requirements of both universities, earning two master degrees.
When is the deadline for applying to the Master's Programme?
The application process is carried out on a rolling basis, there is not a specific applications deadline.
I haven't obtained my Bachelor's degree yet. Can I submit it later?
Applications may be accepted before the applicant has received their Bachelor's or any equivalent degree if the degree is due to be obtained before the beginning of the Programme.
In this case, the application may be accepted on condition that proof of having obtained the degree is submitted before the beginning of the Programme.
What is the difference between your programme and an MBA programme?
While previous professional experience is a bonus, it is not required for the MIM programme.
The MIM intends to provide the students with hands-on skills and the necessary tools in international business and management so as to prepare you to work in a large variety of different positions or pursue an international career. On the other hand, the structure of the programme is designed through the electives and "study abroad" so that you can choose to specialize in the field that interests you most.
Do I have to submit GMAT results?
If you present your GMAT score, it will be taken into consideration and may enhance the value of your application.
GMAT may be required in certain cases according to your academic background and level of experience. If in doubt please check with the Programme Director.
Should I present certified copies of my Diploma and transcripts?
Yes, once you are accepted, part of the enrolment procedure is to hand in the certified copies of documents like the Bachelor's degree certificate and your study transcripts from the institution which issued the certificate or diploma.
Are there employment possibilities in Portugal for international students?
Students from a European Union member state don't need in most cases a work permit and have better chances to find a job, especially with Portuguese language skills.
Students from outside the European Union holding a study visa, may do complementary work while successfully pursuing the studies for which the visa was granted. A work contract might be requested. For further information, please check the site of the Portuguese Service for foreigners and border affairs SEF (Serviço do Estrangeiro e das Fronteiras)
Which professional opportunities do I have after graduation?
Graduate students generally have excellent job opportunities, as they have gathered a rich background in both business and management skills. Fields like international management and business do require large number of post-graduate professionals.
Nevertheless, we believe that your individual chances largely depend on how much personal effort you invest in your studies and the additional qualifications and skills you have acquired rather than just a Master's degree.
I do not have a degree neither in Business nor in Economics. Do I still have a chance to enrol in the MIM Programme?
Yes. The basic requirement for the MIM is a Bachelor degree in Management, Business Studies, Economics or in a related domain, since the programme is built on previous knowledge in these scientific areas.
However, students with different backgrounds may also be admitted if they have had good results in their previous studies and/or professional experience.
Can you help me to find an accommodation upon arrival to Lisbon?
Yes, ISCTE University has a students residence, where students can rent a room from approx. 200€/month (prices vary depending on the type of room). Please go to "Facilities" and have a look at the pictures, find more information and download the residence brochure.
If you prefer staying somewhere else, the International Relations Office can also assist you in finding accomodation outside the residence.
