For more than 60 years, Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs has been educating professionals who work in public, private and nonprofit organizations to make a difference in the world. Through rigorous social science research and hands-on practice, SIPA’s graduates and faculty strive to improve social services, advocate for human rights, strengthen markets, protect the environment, and secure peace, in their home communities and around the world.
The curricula of SIPA’s degree programs all combine training in analytical methods and practical management skills to ensure that graduates are prepared to understand problems and implement solutions. Students combine these core skills with a focus on a policy area of their choice, and they typically engage in a practice-oriented capstone or workshop experience toward the end of their studies.
The School draws its strengths from the resources of New York City and Columbia University, and yet has a global reach, with a student body that is 50 percent international; 15,000 graduates in more than 150 countries; and educational partners in global cities such as Lisbon, London, Paris, Berlin, Singapore, Beijing, Mexico City, and São Paulo.
In 1897 when Columbia's trustees decided to relocate the school from Forty-Ninth Street to Morningside Heights, a green and leafy plateau overlooking midtown and downtown Manhattan, they created a unique urban campus surrounded by distinctive neoclassical buildings. It offered students a refuge from the hurly-burly New York, but still closely linked them to the city and its institutions. The University's location remains a vital asset to this day, where students benefit from Manhattan's incomparable career opportunities and its flourishing commercial and cultural life. The vibrant and culturally diverse Upper West Side, just beyond the campus gates, provides both a center for student social life and a place for many students to call home during their years at SIPA. Columbia is a leading international university in the heart of the world's most international city—a combination no other school can offer.
As part of the Columbia community, SIPA students are often said to be spoiled for choice. They have access to the resources of a major urban university comprising 16 separate schools, 22 libraries, and 5 affiliated institutions.
During any given year, they choose more than 1,000 courses offered throughout the University, drawing on the resources of the social science departments and the schools of business, law, journalism, social work, public health, engineering and applied science, and architecture, as well as Teachers College. In a typical month they can supplement those courses with scores of lectures, presentations, seminars, and documentary films sponsored by the Earth Institute, the Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies, the Humanitarian Affairs Program, and more than a dozen other specialized programs and regional institutes, along with a variety of student groups.
One example is the Center for Energy, Marine Transportation and Public Policy that trains a new generation of policy makers and business leaders through its engaging and innovative academic programs and research. It is a leader in training students to be prepared for challenging issues such as urban energy, energy and development, climate change and global energy governance. A distinguishing feature of the Center track is the hands-on experience that is gained through workshops and field research which are available for students.
Just as important, students also have the opportunity to participate in a range of extracurricular activities with direct relevance to their fields of study.

ISCTE Business School is strategically located in the centre of Lisbon. It is directly served by a subway station and a number of convenient city buses that provide fast and easy access to almost everywhere in the city. There are a number of hotels within walking distance as well as restaurants, shops and one of Lisbon's largest sports and recreational facilities. The airport is a ten minute drive away.

Although it is located in the centre of Lisbon, the ISCTE campus offers a peaceful atmosphere with plenty of fresh air and open space. The facilities include four buildings (45,000 m2), the most recent of which was awarded the Valmor Prize, Portugal's most prestigious architectural award. A Full and Rich International Experience
A real international experience
The first two semesters of classes are held at ISCTE Business School (Lisbon), a leading business school in Portugal, while the last semester of electives classes is held at Columbia University (NYC, USA), one of the best universities in the world.
The Energy MBA offers its students a real international experience which allows them to have the time to really benefit from the full experience of studying in two different universities, enjoying the lively and dynamic campus ambience. Students will be in one class at ISCTE Business School, allowing for the creation of a strong team spirit and companionship among them. In the second year, they will attend classes together with other Columbia University students therefore benefiting from a real international experience, studying, working, sharing experiences with colleagues from several countries, developing a strong international contacts network.
The Energy Living Lab
At the end of the first year, students will follow The Energy Living Lab track, which consists of a multi-day field trip to several energy projects in Portugal, including some of the largest and most innovative projects in the world.
Personal Development Program
IBS strongly strives for the development of students’ skills in alignment with career opportunities. Likewise, once participants join IBS MSc in BA, the PDP - Personal Development Program will contribute, all the way through, to self-commitment towards
a successful development of career perspectives and strategies. The program aims to contribute to self-assessment and identification of career drives, of professional strengths and weaknesses, as well as of professional preferences.
Energy and Politics
The Energy and Politics module analyses Energy as a problem of choices and political conflicts, as the awareness of the various systems of forces and interests present at a given historical moment and of the way in which they can interact, how
they manage to combine and relate is crucial for energy-related issues and decisions.
Creativity Program
The program includes an innovative Creativity Program. At the end of the program, students should be aware of their creative abilities to think “out of the box”, to create and better sell ideas and to trust their capacities in managing complexity and uncertainty when facing unexpected and unknown situations.
Entrepreneurship
ISCTE Business School has a strong entrepreneurship centre, including research, consulting services and a venture capital fund. Top Manager Agenda Seminars
The links of IBS with the business world have always been a key element of its reputation. The business community continues to play an important role in the School’s activities, through the maintenance of a committed part time faculty, a strong
presence in IBS Advisory Board and an involvement in several partnerships aimed to develop applied projects, internships, awards and scholarships.
Top managers are regularly in contact with the School, in an intense and extensive network, continuously shared within the master degrees’ students. Along the program, there will be several seminars and conferences by prominent international managers and policy makers.
Individual Business Mentors
Each student will have an individual Business Mentor. The mentor is a senior manager who provides advice, counseling and expertise in preparing the student for his/her future professional career.
Career Services
Working proactively with participants, from the very beginning of the Program, IBS is willing to assist students to perform a self-analysis and contacts with the labour market in order to help students to find the right path in a career development perspective. The Personal Development Program will be an important input for each student’s career management.

Lisbon is Europe’s West Coast capital and the closest gateway to Africa and Americas. It is also known as the white city, for its unique luminosity. The light, the atmosphere and the Atlantic climate, blended with Mediterranean influences, with warm sunny winters and cool summers, contribute altogether to offer a unique experience for each visitor. Facing the Atlantic Ocean, Lisbon is surrounded by some of the best beaches in Europe as well as some tourist and historical hallmarks such as Estoril and Sintra.
Lisbon is one of the safest cities in Europe and it has a very competitive cost of living, making a one year stay an enjoyable and less demanding budget experience. Enchanted with historical marks, Lisbon is also a dynamic business center with a distinctive international orientation.
