Why Choose the MIM at IBS
Some of the strengths of the IBS Master's in International Management are:
- An after-work schedule to cater for students' professional commitments;
- An intensive and compact programme, lasting one year (plus final project/dissertation);
- A multicultural study environment with fellow students and a faculty of many different nationalities;
- Due credit is given both to:
1) Professional interests, through modules aiming at the acquisition of "how to" competences in international settings;
2) More research-oriented interests, through modules and seminars aimed at the acquisition of capabilities for conducting investigation in the area of international management.
- "Wide band" programme designed to respond to a vast array of interests and specialities;
- Experienced international teaching staff; more than 60% of our staff come from abroad;
- Possibility of getting a double master degree from some partner universities.
Moreover:
- Students have the possibility of learning the Portuguese language during the Master's. This opens opportunities in some of the more dynamic markets nowadays (Brazil, Angola and others). Portuguese is the language spoken by around 300 million people on all continents. We include one basic Portuguese language Course in the tuition fees.
- Lisbon offers an exceptional historical heritage and a large variety of cultural and leisure time activities. And, ISCTE Business School is situated close to the heart of Lisbon.
- Financial advantage over other academic centres in Europe and United States. As the cost of living is below that of other capitals, students will find the time spent in Lisbon free from money concerns.

Courses & experiences
Real case scenarios – excellent opportunities to expand business skills with a hands-on approach
Throughout the studies of the Master in International Management students are equipped with both theoretical and practical knowledge that can be easily transferred to real professional life situations. From the long list of courses, two in particular are designed for learning real case scenarios: International Consulting and International Project, offered in the 2nd semester.
International Consulting
This 5 day-course is comprised of three introduction sessions and two full-days seminar sessions in which the MIM students work together with guest students from the University of Applied Sciences Pforzheim, Germany. Students are divided into groups and are challenged to solve a real consulting case, competing with each other as in a tender, and are requested to present solutions for a specific company. It offers the chance to experience the many aspects of the consultancy business, as the simulated learning settings reflect real problems of the professional world. Furthermore, the course gives experience of cultural differences and gives practical suggestions how to overcome cultural barriers.
The course is lectured by Prof. Juergen Janovsky from University of Applied Sciences Pforzheim, Germany, a specialist for Consulting, and Carla Pedro, a CISCO staff-member with many years of international consulting experience, including EU projects and international sustainability implementation projects. They form an excellent team, lecturing this course in the MIM for since 2003 and are well aware of students’ needs. Beside the very dynamic and interactive learning methods, students appreciate the comprehensive feedback given by this teaching team and report that they could easily transfer many of the topics taught learned to their professional life.
It might be necessary to take one or two days from work for this seminar, or it might take place during the weekend, since it is a very intensive and practical course and takes place during the day. The exact workload and dates are defined every year.

International Project
This course runs for 1,5 months and gives students the opportunity to develop a project for a company’s specific needs. In the beginning, students choose, according to their interest, between research questions from different companies involved and will then work in teams, having regular contact to each company’s representative. Companies involved in past academic years were Malaysian Airlines, Sri Lankan Airlines, Ensul Meci and &Samhoud, among others, challenging students to work on business scenarios of different countries like Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Canada, India, China and Indonesia. Since all companies are working internationally and do not necessarily have their headquarters in Portugal, most sessions usually involve videoconferences. ISCTE-IUL provides specific equipment and meeting rooms for this purpose.
The course is lectured by António Vieira da Silva (Portugal), a very experienced manager who has worked as a CEO in four companies in different business sectors, working now as a management consultant in Europe and South East Asia, and Reinier Starink (Netherlands), who lives and works in Kuala Lumpur, recently as a project manager at &Samhoud. He founded the company Breakthrough Performance, worked in diverse fields such as a Talent & Diversity manager for Shell, and teaches in several universities in Asia and Europe.
